Deal of the Week: Aritzia Warehouse Sale in Vancouver

I know I just posted a Deal of the Week an hour ago, but I had to post this for all of my friends who still live in Vancouver (my home for 7 years). Aritzia is having a massive warehouse sale every day of the long weekend starting today. I always miss Vancouver, the mountains, the ocean, the restaurants, the city…but c’mon, this is just torture!! To all of my Vancouverites, make sure you spend enough for the both of us and let me know what you picked up by commenting below.

Boy Meets Girl

My sense of style can be somewhat spastic at times - tomboyish one day and ultra girly the next! So, for today’s post I decided to use the same top to showcase two very different looks.

I bought this top on a whim and have found it to be the perfect transition piece for day to night, summer to fall or even from one style to the next. I love this bowtie neckline because I think it adds a little sophistication to any ensemble. It’s also a great focal point to my outfit instead of the statement necklaces that I tend to wear.

In my tomboy look, I decided to go casual with some black shorts, flats and a vintage hat. To switch up the look I paired the top with a red polka dotted dress and turquoise earrings. I'm leaving for San Francisco this Thursday so I'm planning on wearing this tomboy look during our Sonoma day trip and the girly version for dinner at the vineyards that evening.

Before I end this post, I want to apologize to my readers for the infrequency of my posts lately. These last two weeks have been really busy but I’m happy to announce that after this long weekend, things should be going back to a normal pace.

Emma and I have been working overtime shooting a lot of outfits, working on some DIY projects and creating some new beauty blogs.  Thanks for your patience and I hope you have an awesome long weekend!

Deal of the Week: ASOS Jumpsuits under $40

As we approach the end of summer many of you “keeners” are shopping for fall wear, filling your closets with autumn coloured skinny jeans and long sleeved cashmere cardigans. Alternatively, for those of you who are like me (i.e., who like to live in denial) you are instead attempting to extend summer nostalgia by continuing to purchase shorts, skirts, and dresses despite the fact that the Labour Day long weekend is oh so near
Everyone in camp two! - Why not throw some staple summer jumpsuits into the mix?Luckily, ASOS has sweetened the deal by offering an additional 10% off their sale items. Here are some that caught my eye:

PETITE Exclusive Playsuit With Off Shoulder Ruffle $60 $21

Playsuit with Strappy Back $51 $26

Mex Tex Print Strappy Playsuit $65 $33

Playsuit with Mex Tex Embroidery $77 $39

Motel Tropical Print Playsuit $82 $31

Band of Gypsies Strapless Playsuit in Bird Print $51 $21

Nautical Stripes

Forgive me for the stereotype, but I had to do a nautical themed outfit. I had all the makings for this classic look so I decided to go all in. Here I am at the Port Credit Marina, wishing I had a yacht but instead, settling on holding on to this life raft…LAME. But, let’s be honest, if I owned a yacht this blog would probably be called "Freaking Fabulous" rather than "Budget Brunettes."

My obsession with stripes began with a top very similar to this one. My first version wore out because I wore it so often so I quickly replaced it with this orange and white striped shirt. Horizontal blue and white stripes scream nautical to me, but I decided to opt for something a little more unexpected like this orange version.

A navy blazer is a wardrobe staple. I tend to use this more in the summer because of its cropped sleeves. So the reason they are cropped on me is because they aren’t exactly meant for twenty-something women. I picked this up in the boys section at Macy’s because when you have the body shape of a 12 year old boy, you can do crazy shit like that. Jealous? You’re not alone, I don’t think anyone is.

The white loafers I'm wearing, I picked up from the Petaluma Outlets and wrote about here. These are probably one of the most comfortable flats that I own and are so cute for the summer!

So did I include all of the necessities for the makings of my nautical theme?
Stripped top? Check! Navy blazer? Check! White loafers? Check! Captain’s hat?... I draw the line there.

Thanks for following and happy shopping!

Blazer: Nautica - $65, Shirt: Joe Fresh - $7, Shorts: Garage - $15, Bag: Thrift - $3, Loafers: Cole Haan - $48.

Deal of the Week: Urban Outfitters' Purrrfect Sunnies

For those of you who, like myself, flirt with sunglasses never willing to fully commit to a long term relationship, why not settle for something short term? Maybe a one night stand is more your fancy. If you’re of the "friends with benefits" nature, hook up with something oh-so-sexy and dare I say – cheap! Nothing exudes sex appeal more so than a good leopard print. Here are some options I would consider, from a pair that bares a little skin to a pair that is by no means shy and fully exposed:

Structured Sunglasses - $16 $10

High Brow Rimless Rectangle Sunglasses - $14 $10

Extreme Cat Eye Sunglasses - $16 $7

Los Feliz Sunglasses - $16 $7

Let Them Eat Cake

Before my recent Zara purchases shown here, I’d say that about 25% of the items in my closet were decked out in sequins. Now, after some additional purchases, I’m going to say it has to be closer to the 30% mark.

What purpose do sequins have on a tweed jacket you ask? Well maybe the easier question would be, what purpose don’t they have(?!) ...except, of course, catching the eye of every passerby and injecting magnitudes of happiness into their lives! If people took sequins more seriously, the need for Prozac would cease to exist....I’m blowing your mind right now aren't I? I’ll give you some time to digest.

Today I'm wearing a very comfy loose fitting tank top that adds a little pop of colour to my look. I love these because they can be twisted, knotted and tucked to create different styles each time you wear them. At this point during the shoot, the clouds were rolling in fast. Luckily, we managed to get a couple of good shots before we called it quits for the day.

Summer Wish List

In order to curtail my spending, I created a “wish list” a while back of items that I have been longing for. I’m hoping that I will stick to it and reduce the amount of impulse buys that I have been making lately. This is an outfit showcasing three out of five items that I have recently purchased from my "wish list".

Found and Purchased:

Black wayfarer sunglasses – I would totally buy the real deal (Ray Bans) but here is the problem, sunglasses never last beyond a year with me. I’ve had them stolen, lost, broken and melted...yes, that really happened. I also have this bad habit of tossing them in my purse and as a result, they become scratched quite quickly. Consequently, buying cheap $10 pairs is a better investment than spending $$$! Since my last wayfarer style sunglasses melted because they were left by the radiator, I was in desperate need of a new pair. Luckily, I found these at Urban Outfitters.

Chambray top – I’m not a fan of jean jackets but I love chambray tops. Don’t ask me why - I won’t be able to explain it. Since the beginning of the summer, I have been looking for something that is quite fitted, of good quality and very light in colour. Geez, I’m so demanding! Surprisingly I found one at Zara that met all of my criteria. I know that I’m going to get a lot of wear out of this. It’s a tomboyish alternative to the oversized cardigans I tend to normally wear.

Clutches – After starting this blog, I started to notice that I was seriously lacking in the clutch department. The only clutches I had were vintage pieces from my mother. Since then, I’ve collected a ton more, mostly from my local thrift store and also some from retail stores. I grabbed this clutch from BCBG because I knew it was unique enough that I likely wouldn't find it anywhere else. Marked down from $166, it was a steal.

Still Searching:

Maxi dress – I’m on the hunt for one in black or colbalt blue. At first, I thought this style of dress was not flattering on us petite folk, but now I think it elongates us because it creates a stream-lined effect. Also, I like how these dresses are super comfortable and effortlessly chic. I know that sheer maxi’s are really ‘in’ this season, but I would prefer it in an opaque fabric.

Gladiator flats – I’ve wanted these since they first appeared on the market. Although there are tons out there, the problem that I am having is that since I’m petite I don’t like shoes to cut off at my ankles, especially when it comes to flats since this makes my legs look shorter. If I can find a pair that meet this criteria I will pick them up pronto.

So that’s pretty much it. If anyone knows where I can find the type of maxi dress and/or gladiator flats that I’m looking for at an affordable price, please let me know by commenting below.

Casual in Calgary

As you know, I went to Calgary in July to visit a friend who I have been meaning to visit for awhile. We ended up spending the majority of our time camping in Banff which was completely fine by me. I love to camp! Bring on the nature, camp fire and toasted marshmallows!

I had a whole series of photo shoots planned during this trip but decided against it for three reasons: no time, too lazy and was having too much fun.

So instead, I decided that I would showcase some of my favourite photos from my trip that display the beautiful scenery and my very practical ensemble that is better suited for a blog called Comfy and Casual…aka, what I would prefer to wear all day but don’t because society judges me.

Whitewater rafting down Kicking Horse River was by far my favourite part of the trip. Despite this being my first time rafting, I did it like a warrior. You don’t want to mess with me, my face says it all (I circled myself in red). ROAR!

We took a 14K hike up the mountains and slid down some parts in our makeshift sled from a backpack. Who would have thought you could hike through snow in the middle of July. I love this place! Clearly using my pro-star modelling skills here. Working the camera like nobody’s business…

Calgary Stampede highlight involves me eating THIS!!!!!! Cotton candy galore. Other stampede grounds intake during the day: poutine, lemonade, nachos and cheese. Just so you know, I ate this thing entirely by myself. I was swatting away eager hands claiming there wasn't enough to share.

Check out these new beauties. I bought a pair of cowboy boots as a souvenir to add to my ever growing collection of boots. Although this was an expensive purchase, it was completely worth it. They are simple enough to easily combine with anything in my current wardrobe. Bonus: beyond comfortable!

All in all, I had the most amazing time with some of my closest friends. The weather was gorgeous, the food was amazing and the scenery was breath taking. I will definitely be back soon. I would also like to say Happy Birthday to Emma before signing off!
