Casual Afternoon

For today's outfit I decided to go casual since I was spending the afternoon at the aquarium in San Francisco. But as always, what's an outfit of mine without a little sparkle? So I wore one of my favourite necklaces for a touch of glam and my sequinned tank top as an added source of sparkle. I hope everyone's first week of Spring is adding a little sunshine to your life.

Happy Birthday to Me

Yesterday I turned one!! How exciting is that? Looking back at my very first post, Pink Sunset, was such an accomplishment for me. At the time I was working in the financial services industry and I was studying for my CSC/GMAT. I really wanted an opportunity to express my creativity (something that was lacking in my life) and share my love for budget friendly fashion finds with a larger community. So I decided to create a home for myself on this tiny piece of the world wide web.  So much has changed in a year, I'm part of the blogging community, dabbling in social media, challenging myself stylistically, discovering new places in my hometown and I'm learning some cool tech skills along the way.

And of course, I couldn't have done it alone. There are a couple of people that I want to thank for helping me along the way. First, Emma Kapetanovic for being a kick ass partner in crime, my man friend for taking photos when I was in desperate need and three, to the readers of my blog for continuing to visit and commenting on my posts. I can't wait to see what another year will bring and as always...

Deal of the Week: 20% off H&M Pants

Patterned, bold, colourful pants seem to be this spring's hottest item so I thought this would be a nice coupon for my trendy readers. At H&M today only, you will receive 20% off any pair of pants when you present this coupon here. I personally wouldn't opt for something so bold for pants but I salute those who have the courage to pull this off!

5 Tips to Shopping Designer-Retailer Collaborations ONLINE

My last experience shopping a designer retailer collaboration was completely different from anything prior because it was, well…online. I managed to stay up until the wee hours of the morning by…I can’t believe I’m admitting this…watching the extra features of the third Lord of the Rings trilogy and it just so happened that when the dvd ended, the Prabal Gurung for Target collection had launched online...which consequently meant that I wasn't going to bed anytime soon.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to write about my online shopping experience and share five tips that I have learnt from shopping this collaboration online. But before I begin, I want to start with a small disclaimer. There are a couple of risks when shopping online:

1)   There is a chance the website may crash given the high volume of visitors; and
2)   Not everything from the collection will be available online so there is no way to know which items won’t be online before hand.

With that in mind, let's get started...

1)  Launch Time?

A popular question for those who are planning to purchase online rather than in store; Unforutnaely, you’re not likely going to find an answer in advance… the stores are being sneaky for good reason (note: the infamous website crash during the Missoni Target collaboration). So, here are my insights: This year, the Prabal Gurung collection launched just before 2am EST. Last year, the Jason Wu for Target collaboration, launched between 3-4am EST (best guesstimate).  If you are planning on purchasing online, the wee hours of the morning seem to be your best bet, but you won’t know for sure until it happens.

2) Make an account before hand

If you are new to the retailer, make sure to create a customer account in advance. Don’t forget to add your address and credit card information so you can check out quickly. This is probably a good time to read the shipping and return policy as well. If you don’t already follow the retailer on social media, I would recommend it so you can get updates about the collaboration in real time as you approach the launch. Also, platforms like Twitter and Facebook will notify you when the collection has launched without having to refresh the retailer’s website over and over again.

3) Do your research

Knowing the collection and prices before hand is critical in highly publicized collaborations. I always make a list of my “must have” items before I purchase and try to stick to the list as much as possible.  I wrote about this tip in more detail in my previous Tips and Tricks post here.

4) Be fast!

This is not the time to diddle daddle. The research you do prior to the launch will be key to ensuring you make it to the check out page before someone else checks out with the items in your cart before you do. If you feel like there is anything that you may have overlooked in your previous research, purchase the “must have” items first and then go back and start adding items that you missed the first time around to make sure you make it out with at least some items from the collection.

5)   Order in multiple sizes

I don’t usually do this when I order online during my regular shopping routine but I think it is incredibly important during retailer designer collections for a couple of reasons: 1) Items sell out quickly 2) They have limited inventory. I recommend ordering your regular size and one size up and or down. It’s hard to predict sizes online, especially for a new collection when sizes can vary from the typical sizes of the retailer or even between the pieces in the collection itself. Once they arrive, you can try them on and return the clothing hassle free and, believe me, there will be a ton of people who will be thankful you did!

Fortunately, I had a lot of success with this experience and I managed to get almost everything I wanted on my must have list. However, I suggest going to a large store in a popular location after attempting to purchase items online in order to maximize the variety of items available to you. Best of luck!

Tic Toc Tic Toc

It was daylight savings on Sunday which unfortunately meant I lost a valuable hour of sleep, something that I have been deprived of lately. However, I will admit there are some benefits to this practice: 1) It's a sign that Spring is just around the corner and; 2) We get more daylight in the evenings. I, for one, am looking forward to more sunlight and more warmth. The appeal of layers and winter accessories has come and gone and now I am eagerly awaiting the chance to strut around in dresses sans the tights.

Confession: I own an alarm clock that I never appropriately adjusted since the last daylight savings, so for 6 month's I've been mentally adjusting the time in my head...6 months!! That's commitment to laziness y'all!

New Beginnings

Ladies and gents, shit just got real!! I finally got my hands on a SLR. As the sun was setting behind the San Francisco skyline, I was determined to rip off the packaging and get my Tyra Banks on.  On this particular day, it was freezing outside and I was in no mood to battle it so we decided to stay indoors in the comfort and warmth of our apartment and test the camera in an indoor setting. Here are the very first photos snapped.

For this look, I decided to turn the sweater around so the neckline showcased my back. The sweater has a pretty low "V" so the x-rated things you would have seen if worn correctly would not have been appropriate for this type of blog. As it so happens, my mom knitted me a scarf that was almost exactly the same maroon as the sweater so I decided to pair them together to make them look as if they were one piece.

The view from my man friend's apartment is stellar. He lives on top of a hill so you can get great views of the city skyline against the Oakland bridge however, I often find myself climbing this hill with multiple bags from the farmer's market so unfortunately I don't have the fondest memories of it.

All my photos up until now have been the work of my Canon point and shoot, which don't get me wrong, has been working wonders considering how old it is (in technology years), but I've always felt that with a better camera, the picture quality would bring the level of awesomeness of my photos from a 7 to a 10. I don't plan on burying my little point and shoot in the technology graveyard just yet, but I do think he will be of better use in the casual settings of my everyday life. So happy retirement old man! You did good!

Pink Ribbon

Spring Break Summary:

1) Travelled to San Francisco to spend time with my man friend
2) Skied in Lake Tahoe with said man friend
3) Caught the flu/virus/cold the day I landed in Toronto
4) Suffered with every symptom known to man and spent 4 days lying in bed blanketed with self pity
5) Outcasted by my friends because I was "contagious" (It's unfortunate that discrimination still exists in this day and age)
6) Was completely unproductive with my time off

So that pretty much summarizes my break! I'm sure you could hear the violins playing while you read that, but if I can't whine to you, then who do I have left?
